The 6th Chinese
Annual Meeting of Vascular Disease and Arterial Function &The 4rd
Asian-Pacific Congress of International Society of Vascular Health
have been held in Beijing,in June 26-28,2009.During the conference
we had the privilege to interview Prof. Chang Gyu Park ,the
following is the interview: |
| |
|
Reporter:What's
similarities and differences between China and South Korea of
cardiovascular diseases? |
|
Prof.Chang
Gyu Park
:There are a lot common between China and South Korea, especially in
northern China. With China rapid economic growth, many people have
high cholesterol, high blood pressure, about 200 million people have
high cholesterol and high blood pressure, which is a big
problem.China and South Korea face the problem of a high salt diet,
it is likely to raise high blood pressure, cause high blood
pressure. There are many fast-food restaurants in South Korea, people
eat a lot of high cholesterol food, and China have similar
findings. We have to stop eating junk food, by reducing salt intake
to lower blood pressure. |
| |
|
Reporter:Please
talk about South Korea's common cardiovascular risk factors, what
are the specific risk factors? |
Prof.Chang Gyu Park
:South Koreans tend to eat high-salt foods for long time, such as
pickled foods.Traditional food such as kimchi is very salty, kimchi
is made of cabbage, peppers and fermented fish ,many Chinese people
are fond of pickles. Some people think that kimchi can prevent SARS.
We need to reduce salt intake,China as well.More exercise can
increase HDL, lower blood pressure, make people healthy. The less the
fish intake the more cardiovascular risk will.Mainland China may be
fewer opportunities to get fish, should be eat more fish.Regular
exercise, reducing salt intake.Consumption of fresh vegetables and
fruits, could reduce cardiovascular events.

Reporter:Whether
early detection of vascular disease is common in South Korea or not?
How about the knowledge in health care workers? |
|
Prof.Chang Gyu Park
:South Korea has a very good social programs, everyone must
participate in the health insurance system.More than 8 years of age
everyone needs testing once every year or once every two years, it
is the responsibility of the Koreans. So it is easy to detect
hypertension, hyperlipidemia, high blood sugar. Get test results,
the Government will notify you have problems, they should see a
doctor. This is a good system. |
| |
|
Reporter:When
should we start to prevent the occurrence of cardiovascular disease? |
|
Prof.Chang Gyu Park
:Vascular age is the real age, much more important than biological
age.In order to improve vascular age, I suggest that lower blood
pressure, lower blood cholesterol levels, smoking cessation, reducing
alcohol consumption, regular physical examination, to maintain
low-sodium diet, on a regular basis to see a doctor for blood
pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar testing.Over 40 years of
age for men and women over the age of 50 should see a doctor once a
year. |
| |
|
Reporter:Please
talk about your feelings of this academic meeting? |
|
Prof.Chang Gyu Park
:Not only a well-organized conference, but also to remind the
Chinese patients and doctors vascular disease and vascular health,
that is a very important thing and ultimately reduce cardiovascular
disease. So I think more patients and physicians to participate in
such workshop, and finally we can prevent cardiovascular disease. On
the prevention of vascular disease and vascular health, this seminar
is extremely important. I wish this conference a success. |
